5 hours 54 minutes to ride 83.7 miles
The first 18 miles we ride getting out of the big city. We have been warned about 2 steep descents that have lights at the bottom. First one is not bad but the second one is kind of hidden from
view. The only SAG of the day is at mile 39. Before we get to the SAG we run in to some road construction where they have put gravel down for the chip seal finish. Bad news is that there is lots of extra gravel, which is no issue for vehicles but really bad for bikes . It makes it almost impossible for anyone to pass as there are piles of gravel left with vehicle tracks. Carol has made a graham crackers and peanut butter for snacks. after the SAG we hope the gravel ends but no such luck. 5 miles before the SAG and 6 miles after the SAG.
We are also in Amish country and we have seen signs of horses on the roads. No signs of them actually in their buggies but we have been warned to yield to them if they are on the road.
We go through Hagerstown, where there is not much to see or anything to really stop and eat. We are looking forward to a DQ stop at mile 70 but, it is closed for renovations. On to Centerville where we find a Mom and Pop pizza place that has a great all you can eat salad and pizza special on Saturday's. It is only $7.24 which includes a drink and they are surprised when we only have the salad and a piece of pizza. Could not eat more as we still had 12 miles to go. Nice people who were interested in our bikes and what we were doing and why. As we left there was a couple of drops of rain but not enough to get us wet. It is 90F and about 99% humidity . Richmond is bigger than I thought and very busy traffic as we head to the hotel. Drivers in Illinois not bike friendly as they continue to honk their horns at us. Richmond is famous for its rose gardens and we passed a big one but no where to stop for a photo.
