3 hours and 25 minutes to cover 39.82 miles.
We got to sleep in late this morning as it is only a 40 mile ride. A little bit worried as there was big thunder clouds and lots of rain in Liberal last night. They said it would be clear by morning.
It was cloudy when we got up but looked to be clearing. The bad news was that the wind was blowing and not in the right direction. As soon as we left we got in to a pace line as the winds were 18mph gusting to 25mph! We were crawling along at about 11mph and struggling to keep that pace.
At mile 18 you go through Hooker Oklahoma where the only SAG stop of the day is. Not much to see as we are trying to stay safe in the pace line and we are in farm country with the crops just in. There is, surprisingly, quite a few hills on the route today and certainly dispels the rumor that this is flat country. We are still in the Oklahoma "panhandle" which used to be unknown territory as it belonged to Spain until taken over by the early settlers.
At mile 35 we cross the Kansas state line. Once again we stop at the sign to sprinkle sand to make sure we get safe passage through the state.
Liberal Kansas is the home of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz so US 54 is the "Official Yellow Brick Road". In addition to the Wizard of Oz park there is also the mid-America air museum. Time to rest clean the bikes and get ready for tomorrow.
