4 hours 58 minutes to cover 72.62 miles and 1,000' of elevation gain.
Leaving this morning it was a little chilly so some people had arm warmers on. There were clouds in the sky for the first time so we weren't sure whether we would be getting wet or not. We left late as there were only 72 miles today and there are usually tailwinds to help you get there, but, not today. There were no services for 31 miles but at mile 19 there is a modern day ghost town with the only thing left being TEX! At least nobody saw anything that appeared to be open or operating.
On to the only SAG of the day at mile 31 which was at a Dairy Queen. Split a small milkshake with Barry as I am still trying to get better. I think that I wasn't feeling well yesterday because I had used the camelback for the first time in a week and it may not have been cleaned well enough.
Out of the SAG to the Oklahoma border at mile 50. We sprinkled the sand from the Pacific at the sign to make sure we had safe passage through Oklahoma. We then stopped at a little store and gas station for some Gatorade. While we did that some of the riders bought hot dogs, hamburgers and even a corn dog. Yes at this point riders will eat anything resembling food so they don't have to eat gels or protein bars. One of the locals approached us to tell us that there was a much nicer Oklahoma sign when you leave the town. I am not sure what that says about the town of Texhoma that we were leaving.
We had a good pace line going today which takes team work and were actually making good time going in to the wind. For the last 10 miles people kept talking about stopping at the DQ close to the hotel as milk shakes are a great recovery drink and everyone was hungry. When we arrived in Guymon we could not find the DQ so asked a local. He pointed back the way we had come and said that we would have to go back that way. We couldn't understand how we all missed it! Then he added that we would have to go all the way back to Texas as there wasn't one here. Needless to say we did not take that option. We found a nice Mexican restaurant close to the hotel and had a great lunch.
