5 hours and 7 minutes to ride 80.3 miles.
Yesterday was a rest day which meant we cleaned the bikes, walked around town and did not much of anything.
When we got up this morning it had rained and the clouds were very black. Leaving the hotel it was not raining but was hot and muggy. We go through some of the older residential areas of Erie, looking at historical references to the war of 1812. We get on SR 5 E where we will spend most of the day. We ride along the lake on one side of the road and vineyards on the other. Some great scenery and nice houses with many campgrounds and holiday cottages. At mile 19 we cross the New York state line so we stop and sprinkle sand and continue on to a historic lighthouse. This is located in Westfield/Barcelona which is in the heart of the worlds largest concord grape belt. It is historic as in 1831 the light was provided by natural gas fed through hollowed out wooden pipes to the lamps in the tower. Viewed from lake Erie at night the whole tower appeared to be one complete constant and unwavering blaze. We leave and go to the Sag at mile 42 where we stock up on snacks as it is the only Sag today.
At mile 58 we stop at a Tim Horton's as we have told our American friends all about how good they are. Ice cap and doughnut (shared with Julie) later, we are off. At mile 70 Rich has a flat tire so Barry stays and the girls continue. Sarah has a slow leak in her tire but we manage to get to the hotel before it is flat. Rich arrives just in time to change it - but at least has a pump and is in the shade.
Very nice day today and day 42 with no rain and it is also not as humid
