Holbrook Arizona to Gallup New Mexico

5 hours 48 minutes in the saddle to ride the 89.22 miles. 8 hours 40 minutes start to finish.

Once again we had to spend all day on I-40! There were absolutely no services on the interstate for the first 37 miles. We made sure we stopped every 10 miles to check for pieces of wire. This proved very smart as the second stop we managed to pull a wire out of Wendy's tire before it had a chance to pierce the tube and cause a flat. Just after that we ran in to road construction where I-40 was shut down to one lane each way for bridge construction. Tracy had to find someone on the site that would allow us to go through or we would have to shuttle all the riders around the 3 mile stretch. Would have caused logistical issues as the vans would have to go about 25 miles round trip with only 3 riders each time. Tracy finally managed to get permission for us to walk through the first site ride on the road to the second site then walk through the second site. The only issue was that all the riders had to be together so it took about 45 minutes of waiting for everyone to arrive. When we manages to get to the second bridge site they knew nothing and wanted us to turn around. Being nice to them finally proved to work and once the whole group got together they stopped the crane and allowed us to walk through.

More debris on the bad shoulder which caused more flats again today. Just when we thought we were out of snake country there was a nice big dead one on the shoulder.

We stopped at the second SAG at mile 63 at Indian City which is a combined trading post and tourist stop run by Native Americans. We had fresh fry bread sprinkled with white and brown sugar along with honey. A nice change of snack. Carol also made a high protein salad served in little cups as a treat so we were really spoiled today.

8 miles later we stopped to sprinkle sand at the New Mexico state line so the fairies would allow us safe passage. In to Gallup for the end of the day.
