Flagstaff to Holbrook

Back in the saddle again! 6 hours 17 minutes in the saddle and 92.33 miles.

This started as a great day as we smoked the first 30 miles in about an hour and 30 minutes. Then things started to go wrong. We spent all day on Interstate 40. I thought I-10 was bad but it was nothing compared to how bad the shoulder was and the amount of debris left from exploding truck tires, road kill, and even a bunch of loose onions. I don't know how many flat tires the group had but there were 2 tires that had to be replaced. Barry also had a flat but luckily for him he was just entering the SAG and was able to repair the tire in the shade and use the pump rather than a cartridge.

After the SAG stop we continued on to Winslow Arizona where the picture is "Standing on the corner of Winslow Arizona". We stopped at Sonic for a quick bite and as it is one of the few restaurants in town almost all the group stopped which caused a little confusion with the orders. It is a drive in restaurant, so with 15 people trying to order from the one machine the poor staff were overwhelmed.

From there we were off to the next stop at the "Jackrabbit Trading post". Bad news was that there was a headwind which continued to get stronger for the final 20 miles. We stopped at Dairy Queen 1/2 mile from the hotel to find out it was happy hour from 2 - 4 so managed to get milkshakes for half price. Last 1/2 mile of course, we had to climb through road construction to the hotel. Good to be out of the wind and finished for the day.

  1. Looking good! Hope the weather cools down a bit and the climbs are not so dramatic.
