Riverside to Indio California

5 hours 46 minutes - 86 miles

Started off not the way you want it to! We were out of our routine and for the first time we had put our water bottles in the fridge, which of course we forgot until Wendy noticed just before we were going to leave the parking lot. We recovered them which was a good thing as immediately leaving the hotel we had a 5 km climb. Of course this pales in comparison to the 8km climb up Lamb Canyon to Beaumont at the 40 km mark.
We did, however enjoy a great tailwind for 20 km as we approached Palm Springs and the windmill farms. We did stop in Palm Springs for a yogurt before pushing on. I have no idea what happened but somehow for the last 40 km's we had a headwind! The weather got really HOT (can you say 109 degrees F) and we just could not drink enough water Gatorade or anything. We finally had to stop in the shad of a bus shelter to pour water over Wendy's head so she could cool down enough to finish the day. It was not over as she did not feel good with a headache and chills (all signs of heat exhaustion). I got leg cramps while out for dinner and the waitress was wondering if she should be letting EMS know. We went to K Mart to buy camelbacks and some pills recommended for my leg cramps. Bad news is that tomorrow is suppose to be even hotter and further.
